Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that common anti-virus applications do not yet cover. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you didn't intentionally install, if your browser crashes, or if you browser start page has changed without your knowing, you most probably have spyware. But even if you don't see anything, you may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging that is silently tracking your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile of you that will be sold to advertisement companies. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm in trying to see if something snooped into your computer, too :)
Spyware is becoming an increasing problem among all computers on the internet. It increases network and internet traffic, slow down computers tremendously, and pop-up ads without you doing a thing. For more information you can read an article posted on the web.
Here is a few things you can do to help protect against this new threat:
1. Download Spybot - Search & Destroy. Its free!! Here is their main site.
2. Install the program by running the file you just downloaded. Accepting all the default prompts will be fine.
3. Search for updates and install them.
4. Click "check for problems" button to run a system scan.
5. When completed, a list of everything it found will be displayed. You might be surprised!
6. Click "fix selected problems" and remove the greyware.
7. You can also immunize the system as a preventive measure to block these unwanted bugs.
8. Run these scans weekly!
Now... don't think this takes place of Antivirus programs or scans. This should be done IN ADDITION to Virus scanning. You should scan for viruses just as often, and also have "resident virus protection" running at all times. I recommend Avast Antivirus. It is free for home users and works very well. I have used it for a long time. You always get free updates that will not run out of subscription like others.
I hope this helps! It will make all our computers happier! ;) If you have any questions please email me or post on the message boards.
